12nd Domino World Champion 2006: Marina DespotovicThis year showed a new participation record: 80 players from seven countries played in Estonia, Germany, Norway and Switzerland to get the title. And for the first time in FIDO history the title went to the winter camp of JUVENTE Germany in Bielefeld – together with the third rank which went to Joakim Gunnerød from Oslo, another camp participant. The same day socialist daily paper »Neues Deutschland« published an interview with the chairman of FIDO Germany, Frank Lindemann. So for the first time in Germany a nationwide paper presented tactics, rules and the history of the way domino is played by FIDO. The 13-year-old World Champion had learned the game for the first time half a year earlier at IOGT World Congress near Basle in Switzerland. Some short refreshment rounds in Bielefeld were sufficient for her to win two of the three rounds – whereof one with a big distance ahead – what at last was decisive to gain the World Cup. The same day, the German socialist newspaper »Neues Deutschland« published an interview with Frank Lindemann, President of FIDO Germany, by this informing for the first time nationwide about the domino game according to FIDO rules. On 6th January 2007, Marina got the cup in a short public ceremony from Frank Lindemann, filled with winegum (the cup, not Frank Lindemann). Thanks to FIDO Switzerland co-ordinator Alex Klee, the event was covered by the media, which reported as follows: This is so far (after the norwegian press excitement after the first world championship in 1995) the biggest media echo for the FIDO world championship. |
